Los Angeles’ Slaughterhouse is back with its new EP, Sick and Tired, which mixes early 80s-inspired hardcore with Death Rock. After a busy 2024, the band quickly returned to the studio with producer Cameron Webb (Motörhead, Alkaline Trio, Pennywise) to record this release, which sets the tone for 2025.
The EP starts with DNA, a high-energy track with a catchy chorus. Singer Meriel O’Connell describes it as a big, bold statement against the world we live in—a “larger scale fuck you” to the oppressive systems of cis-hetero, Euro-centric, ableist, capitalist society. It’s an anthem for those fed up with the status quo, and its rebellious tone resonates strongly. Personally, this is my favourite track of the EP.
Next, Sick and Tired delivers fast-paced punk with an attitude that matches the EP’s opening track. The energy doesn’t let up, and it’s clear the band is here to make noise.
The cover of Black Flag’s My War introduces a bit more chaos but remains true to the band’s LA roots. While it may not reach the wild intensity fans might expect, it’s still a solid interpretation that shows the band’s musicality.
Smiles starts off slower but picks up speed as it progresses, offering a catchy hook that sticks in your head. The final track, Whips and Chains” slows things down again but finishes strong with powerful riffs, leaving a lasting impression.
Meriel O’Connell’s vocals shine throughout, with both an intense scream and a controlled singing style. The production is clean and solid, ensuring each track lands with full impact. While Sick and Tired doesn’t break new ground, it solidifies Slaughterhouse as a band worth watching. This EP is a great introduction to what promises to be an exciting year ahead for them. For fans of hardcore and punk, this is definitely worth checking out.
